PRACTISING LAW INSTITUTE PUBLISHES
HOW TO WRITE A PATENT APPLICATION, SECOND EDITION

- Jeffrey G. Sheldon Authors Foremost Treatise on Patent Applications -

Pasadena, CA - Practising Law Institute has published the second edition of How to Write a Patent Application, written by Jeffrey G. Sheldon, founding partner of Sheldon Mak & Anderson PC, a Pasadena-based intellectual property law firm. Originally published in 1993, How to Write a Patent Application has been a benchmark text for inventors, entrepreneurs, managers and patent lawyers, both veteran and novice. It offers a step-by-step process for handling a wide range of patents, and explains, analyzes and illustrates all the essential principles and techniques of drafting solid patent applications. The new edition has a revised section numbering system and includes new and expanded discussion on a variety of topics.

"Filing a patent application is a long, complicated process with many steps to consider. The book was developed in order to provide guidelines for obtaining a patent that will be sustained by the courts" said Mr. Sheldon. "It has been a privilege to provide these guidelines for my colleagues."

The new edition expands on a variety of topics, including inventorship and the "conception" of the invention; PTO guidelines on patentable subject matter under section 101; reasons to limit the number of claims in an application; the desirability of being liberal in identifying inventors for a provisional application; additional strategies for claims that will satisfy In re Bilski; the latest PTO requirements for computer-implemented inventions; the obviousness analysis for chemical inventions; product-by-process claims; the Federal Circuit's application of the Supreme Court's KSR ruling.

Sheldon Mak & Anderson PC provides legal services in the areas of patents, copyrights and trademarks, trade secrets and IP-related litigation, both here and abroad to emerging and established businesses in an array of industries. Headquartered in Pasadena, the firm has offices in Upland, Riverside and Ventura.
